For this purpose, cement and concrete as well as concrete durability studies were carried out. CEM II/A and CEM II/B cements were produced by combinations of Portland cement and carbonate rock. For systematic investigations four different Portland cements were combined with five different dolomite-rich carbonate rocks and a calcite-rich limestone as reference material. Relevant cement and concrete properties were tested. It turned out that all five dolomitic carbonate rocks enabled comparably high performance cements and concretes like the calcite-rich reference limestone. Therefore, dolomitic carbonate rocks could also be used as main cement constituents as well as the limestones defined in the cement standard.
If this knowledge is taken into account in the next revision of the cement standard, cement manufacturers could also use so far not usable dolomitic carbonate rocks from their quarries for cement production in the future.
